STEM Degrees in Market Analysis: How Degrees Shape Careers in Market Analysis.
In celebration of STEM Day, we delve into the experiences of two former STEM Degree Students now thriving as research analysts here at IDR Medical. They share their experiences and insights on how their academic backgrounds have shaped their careers, providing them with unique advantages in the workplace.
Meet Oscar, Senior Analyst:
Can you share a bit of your background?
- Length of service at IDR Medical?
I’ve been at IDR Medical for 2 years and 2 months.
- Degree?
I studied Chemistry at Cardiff University.
- What made you choose that field of study/university?
I had a brilliant teacher during my A-levels who inspired me to take Chemistry further. The problem-solving aspect fascinated me, and the lab work was always fun. When I visited Cardiff for an open day, I was sold immediately. It offered an exciting university experience with state-of-the-art chemistry facilities.
- What career advice did you receive while studying, and does this relate to your current role?
I didn’t receive much career advice from the university, but I preferred to talk to my parents for guidance. The general advice was to pursue something interesting, which led me to the business side rather than lab work.
- What do you enjoy most about your current role?
The responsibility! Overseeing projects from start to finish and liaising with clients is rewarding. Delivering the project report after months of hard work is the best part.
- Hobbies outside of work?
I enjoy traveling, using my telescope on clear nights, and keeping my weekends busy with activities or visits to friends.
Questions:
- Is there anything specific from your studies that you find most applicable in your current role?
The analytical skills are paramount. Dealing with large amounts of qualitative and quantitative data is a big part of the job, and my Chemistry background prepared me well.
- Can you recall an example of a project where your technical background provided a unique perspective or advantage?
Generally, any project involving medical drugs allows me to leverage my knowledge effectively.
- Have you found that your technical background helps in communicating complex data to non-technical stakeholders?
Absolutely! It’s crucial to condense complex findings into a concise story, which I do in every project at IDR Medical.
- Do you incorporate any specific scientific methods in your research?
I often break problems down into components and solve them individually, a method that served me well in Organic Chemistry.
Final Thought:
- What advice would you give to someone with a STEM degree considering a career in market analysis?
STEM graduates have strong analytical skills needed for market analysis. However, storytelling is also essential. Combining data manipulation with effective communication will lead to success.
Meet Ru, Research Analyst:
Can you share a bit of your background?
- Length of service at IDR Medical?
1 year and 5 months.
- Degree?
I studied Biochemistry.
- What made you choose that field of study/university?
I love Biology and Chemistry and chose Biochemistry for its application to health, cosmetics, and food. It’s a broad field that really excites me.
- What career advice did you receive while studying, and does this relate to your current role?
I was advised to “do something you’re passionate about.” I’ve always wanted to work in healthcare, and this role allows me to do just that.
- What do you enjoy most about your current role?
Learning about the new innovations our clients develop, especially regarding diagnostic tools.
- Hobbies outside of work?
I enjoy singing, reading, and going on walks.
Questions:
- Is there anything specific from your studies that you find most applicable in your current role?
Analyzing transcripts and summarizing articles from my degree helps me immensely.
- Can you recall an example of a project where your technical background provided a unique perspective or advantage?
In a recent study on RA and CTDs, my understanding of the science behind these conditions helped me grasp why some clinicians find diagnoses challenging.
- Have you found that your technical background helps in communicating complex data to non-technical stakeholders?
I haven’t had a specific opportunity for that yet, but I’m sure it will come.
- Do you incorporate any specific scientific methods in your research?
Not particularly; I focus more on applying my knowledge to the analysis rather than specific methods.
Final Thought:
- What advice would you give to someone with a STEM degree considering a career in market analysis?
Finding a market analysis role in a field you're passionate about can greatly enhance your understanding and ability to advise clients.
Both Oscar and Ru highlight the versatility of STEM degrees, emphasizing the importance of analytical skills and effective communication in their roles as research analysts. Their experiences illustrate how a strong foundation in science can lead to success in market analysis, especially in dynamic fields like healthcare.
